What is a crypto profit and loss calculator?

A crypto profit and loss calculator shows how much you gained or lost on a trade once trading fees and tax are counted. You enter how much you invested, the price you bought at and the price you sold at. The tool then works out your net result, your return on investment (ROI) and the price you needed to reach just to break even. It works for any coin, from Bitcoin and Ethereum to smaller altcoins, and in any currency from the menu at the top of this page.

How to use this calculator

  1. Tap your currency at the top, or open the "more currencies" menu for the full list.
  2. Pick your coin. The live price appears above the boxes, and you can check the wider market on our live crypto chart.
  3. Type the amount you invested and the buy and sell prices, or tap "Use live price".
  4. Open "Advanced options" to add the fees your exchange charges and an estimated tax rate.
  5. Read your net profit or loss, ROI, break-even price and the scenario table. Use Copy or Share to keep the result.

How the result is calculated

The calculator uses standard formulas, so you can check every number yourself:

  • Coins bought = (amount invested − buy fee) ÷ buy price
  • Sale value = coins bought × sell price
  • Proceeds = sale value − sell fee
  • Profit before tax = proceeds − amount invested
  • Net profit = profit before tax − tax (tax is only charged on a profit)
  • ROI = net profit ÷ amount invested × 100
  • Break-even sell price = buy price ÷ ((1 − buy fee) × (1 − sell fee))

ROI is a standard measure of how much you earned compared with what you put in. Investopedia explains the ROI formula in more detail.

Worked example. You invest 1,000 and buy Bitcoin at 60,000. You sell at 66,000. Both fees are 0.1% and there is no tax.

Buy fee = 1.00, so coins bought = 999 ÷ 60,000 = 0.01665. Sale value = 0.01665 × 66,000 = 1,098.90. Sell fee = 1.10, so proceeds = 1,097.80.

Net profit = 1,097.80 − 1,000 = 97.80, which is an ROI of 9.78%. The break-even sell price is 60,120.18.

Why fees change your result

A 10% rise in price does not mean a 10% profit. Fees are taken when you buy and again when you sell, so the price has to rise a little before you are even. That is what the break-even price shows. Small fees matter most when you trade often, or when a trade only moves a few percent.

Where the numbers come from

Live coin prices come from CoinGecko. Currency conversion uses daily exchange rates, so a large amount can differ slightly from what your bank or exchange shows. Real trades also involve spreads, slippage and network fees, so treat the result as an estimate. New to trading? Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the result?

The maths is exact for the numbers you enter, because it uses standard formulas. The result is still an estimate. Your exchange may charge different fees, and live prices and exchange rates update at intervals, so they can differ slightly from the price you see on your exchange.

What is the break-even price?

It is the sell price at which you get back exactly what you invested after paying buy and sell fees. Selling above it gives a profit before tax, and selling below it gives a loss.

Does it work for coins that are not in the list?

Yes. Choose "Other coin", then type your own buy and sell prices.

Should I use the tax box?

Tax rules are different in every country and can change. The tax box is only a simple estimate that applies your rate to any profit. Please check the official rules where you live or ask a qualified adviser.
