What is a crypto position size calculator?

A position size calculator tells you how many coins to buy or sell so that, if your stop-loss is hit, you lose only the amount you planned to risk. Instead of guessing how much to put in, you start from your account balance and the percent of it you accept losing on one trade. The tool then works out the size of the trade from the distance between your entry and your stop-loss. It works for long and short trades, for any coin, and in any currency from the menu at the top of this page.

How to use this calculator

  1. Tap your currency at the top, then pick your coin. The live price appears above the boxes, and you can check the wider market on our live crypto chart.
  2. Type your account balance and the percent you want to risk. Many traders keep this between 0.5% and 2%.
  3. Type your entry price and your stop-loss price. A stop below the entry means a long trade, and a stop above the entry means a short trade.
  4. Add a take-profit if you want to see your risk/reward ratio. It is optional.
  5. Open "Advanced options" to set your leverage and the fee your exchange charges.
  6. Read your position size, position value and margin. Use Copy or Share to keep the result.

How the result is calculated

The calculator uses standard risk-based sizing, so you can check every number yourself:

  • Amount at risk = account balance × risk %
  • Stop-loss distance = |entry price − stop-loss price|
  • Loss per coin at the stop = stop-loss distance + entry fee per coin + exit fee per coin
  • Position size = amount at risk ÷ loss per coin at the stop
  • Position value = position size × entry price
  • Margin needed = position value ÷ leverage
  • Potential reward = position size × (|take-profit − entry| − fees per coin)
  • Risk/reward ratio = potential reward ÷ amount at risk

Risk-based sizing is a core part of risk management. Investopedia explains position sizing in more detail.

Worked example. Your balance is 10,000 and you risk 1%. You enter Bitcoin at 60,000 with a stop-loss at 58,800. Fees are 0.1% on each side.

Amount at risk = 100. Stop distance = 1,200, which is 2.00% of the entry. Fees per coin = 60 + 58.80 = 118.80, so loss per coin at the stop = 1,318.80.

Position size = 100 ÷ 1,318.80 = 0.07583 BTC. Position value = 4,549.59. At 5x leverage the margin needed is 909.92. With a take-profit at 63,600 the reward is about 263.60, a risk/reward ratio of 2.64.

Why position size matters more than the entry

Two traders can take the same trade and have very different results, because one sized the trade by feel and the other sized it by risk. A tight stop lets you take a larger position for the same risk, and a wide stop forces a smaller one. Leverage does not change how much you lose at your stop. It only changes how much margin is locked up, so always check that your stop-loss sits well before any liquidation price.

Where the numbers come from

Live coin prices come from CoinGecko. Currency conversion uses daily exchange rates, so a large amount can differ slightly from what your bank or exchange shows. Real trades also involve spreads, slippage and funding fees, and a stop-loss can fill at a worse price in a fast market, so treat the result as an estimate. New to trading? Frequently asked questions

How much of my account should I risk per trade?

There is no single right answer. Many traders risk between 0.5% and 2% of their balance on one trade so that a run of losses does not hurt the account badly. Choose a level you are comfortable with and keep it the same from trade to trade.

Does leverage change my position size?

No. Your position size comes from your risk and your stop-loss distance. Leverage only changes the margin you need to open that position. Higher leverage locks up less margin, but it also brings your liquidation price closer.

Does it work for short trades?

Yes. If your stop-loss is above your entry price, the calculator treats the trade as a short. Your take-profit must then be below your entry price.

Does it work for coins that are not in the list?

Yes. Choose "Other coin", then type your own entry, stop-loss and take-profit prices.
