About this data

Sector figures here are pulled live from CoinGecko's free public category data — no paid data service involved. Categories are recalculated by CoinGecko throughout the day as coin prices move, so figures refresh each time this page loads.

What are cryptocurrency categories?

Cryptocurrency categories, or sectors, group coins and tokens by what they're built for — Layer 1 blockchains, DeFi, meme coins, AI tokens, real-world assets, and dozens more. Grouping the market this way makes it easy to see which parts of crypto are leading or lagging on any given day, instead of just looking at individual coins one at a time.

Why sector rotation matters

Money in crypto tends to rotate between sectors rather than move everywhere at once — a strong day for AI tokens doesn't always mean a strong day for meme coins or DeFi. Watching which categories are gaining the most on a 24-hour view is one way traders spot where attention and capital are currently flowing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cryptocurrency category?
A cryptocurrency category is a group of coins and tokens that share a common purpose or theme, such as Layer 1 blockchains, DeFi protocols, or meme coins. It lets you compare an entire part of the market rather than a single asset.
How is a sector's 24h price change calculated?
It's a market-cap-weighted average of every coin's price change in that category over the last 24 hours, so larger coins in a sector influence the figure more than smaller ones.
What does dominance mean for a sector?
Dominance is that sector's market cap shown as a percentage of the entire tracked cryptocurrency market — a rough measure of how large a footprint that category currently has.
How often does this data update?
The figures are fetched live from CoinGecko's public API each time this page loads, so they reflect current market conditions rather than a cached or delayed snapshot.
