What is a Fibonacci retracement and extension calculator?

Fibonacci levels are price levels that traders watch after a big move. They come from ratios in the Fibonacci number sequence, such as 23.6%, 38.2%, 61.8% and 78.6%. After a strong rise or fall, price often pauses or turns near one of these levels, which are called retracements. Levels beyond the original move, such as 127.2% and 161.8%, are called extensions and are often used as profit targets. This calculator takes your swing high and swing low and works out every level for you, in any currency from the menu at the top of this page.

How to use this calculator

  1. Tap your currency at the top, then pick your coin. The live price appears above the boxes, and the chart below follows your coin.
  2. Choose the trend direction. Pick "Uptrend" if price rose from a low to a high, or "Downtrend" if it fell from a high to a low.
  3. Type the swing high and the swing low of that move. On the chart, these are the two clear turning points at each end of the move.
  4. Add a custom level in percent if you also use a ratio that is not in the list. It is optional.
  5. Press Calculate, then read the price ladder and the table. Use Download CSV to keep the levels.

How the levels are calculated

The calculator uses the standard formulas, so you can check every number yourself. The range is the swing high minus the swing low.

  • Uptrend retracement = swing high − range × ratio
  • Downtrend retracement = swing low + range × ratio
  • Uptrend extension = swing low + range × ratio (a ratio above 100%)
  • Downtrend extension = swing high − range × ratio (a ratio above 100%)

The retracement ratios used are 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8% and 78.6%. The 50% level is not a true Fibonacci ratio, but traders use it widely. The extension ratios used are 127.2%, 161.8%, 200% and 261.8%. Investopedia explains Fibonacci retracement in more detail.

Worked example. Bitcoin rises from a swing low of 50,000 to a swing high of 70,000, so the range is 20,000. You choose Uptrend.

The 38.2% retracement is 70,000 − 20,000 × 0.382 = 62,360. The 50% level is 60,000. The 61.8% level is 70,000 − 12,360 = 57,640.

The 127.2% extension is 50,000 + 20,000 × 1.272 = 75,440, and the 161.8% extension is 82,360.

How traders use these levels

Many traders look for a bounce near the 38.2%, 50% or 61.8% retracement in an uptrend, and use the extensions as possible targets for a new high. A common idea is to place a stop-loss just beyond the next level down. You can test a plan with our risk/reward calculator. Fibonacci levels are not a guarantee. Price can pass straight through any of them, so traders usually combine them with support and resistance, volume or other signals.

Where the numbers come from

Live coin prices come from CoinGecko. Currency conversion uses daily exchange rates, so a large amount can differ slightly from what your bank or exchange shows. The levels are exact for the swing you enter, but the swing you choose is a judgment call, so different traders can get different levels. New to trading? Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between retracement and extension?

A retracement level sits inside the swing you measured, and shows where price may pull back to. An extension level sits beyond the swing, and shows where price may go if the trend continues.

Which swing high and low should I use?

Use the two clear turning points at the start and end of the move you want to measure. On a chart, these are usually the lowest low and the highest high of that move. Longer swings tend to give levels that more traders watch.

Why is 61.8% called the golden ratio?

It comes from dividing a number in the Fibonacci sequence by the number that follows it, once the numbers are large. Traders give this level a lot of attention, and many look for reactions in the zone between 61.8% and 65%.

Does it work for a downtrend?

Yes. Choose "Downtrend", and type the swing high and swing low of the fall. The retracement levels are then measured upward from the low, and the extension levels fall below the low.
