What is crypto yield?
Crypto yield is the return earned for putting a coin to work instead of letting it sit idle — through staking, lending, or supplying it to a liquidity pool. It's usually expressed as an Annual Percentage Yield (APY), which shows what a deposit would earn over a full year if the current rate held steady.
CeFi vs DeFi yield
CeFi (centralized finance) yield comes from a platform like an exchange holding and lending out your coins on your behalf — simple to use, but you're trusting that company with custody. DeFi (decentralized finance) yield comes directly from a smart contract on-chain, like a staking or lending protocol — you keep more control, but you're trusting the code and the protocol instead. The table above tracks live DeFi pools; see the note under the table for why CeFi rates aren't included yet.
Why APY ranges vary so widely
The same coin can show a huge APY range because different providers take on different levels of risk and lock-up time. A flexible, instantly-withdrawable pool usually pays less than a locked pool with a fixed term, and a newer or smaller protocol often offers a higher rate to attract deposits — which can also mean higher risk.
