About these numbers
Total Cryptocurrencies Tracked and Total Exchanges Tracked above are live, pulled straight from CoinGecko's free public API every time this page loads — no paid key involved.
Two things CoinMarketCap's original page shows that aren't included here: new coins created in the last 24h / 7d / 30d, and the yearly high/low for that metric. Both sit behind CoinMarketCap's paid Pro API, so rather than showing made-up numbers, they're left out. If you get access to that API later, this is the section to plug it into.

How this compares to a basic coin counter
| Feature | This page | A static image or badge |
|---|---|---|

| Exchanges tracked | Live count alongside the coin total | Usually not shown at all |
| Market cap split | Live BTC / ETH / other dominance | Rarely included |
| Data source | CoinGecko's free public API, no key needed | Varies, often unclear |
| Cost | Free, no login required | Varies |
Why the number of tracked coins keeps growing
New tokens launch every day — new blockchains, new projects, and thousands of low-effort copies alongside them. Trackers like CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap add a coin to their count as soon as it has a working contract and some trading activity, which is why the total climbs steadily and occasionally jumps when a wave of similar tokens launches at once. It says nothing about quality; most of these coins carry little to no real trading volume.
For a broader look at market capitalization and additional context, sites like CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko are useful companions to this page.
